At least seven people were shot dead on Monday (23) in the Half Moon Bay area of California, USA. It is the second attack with a firearm and multiple victims in three days in the state – on Saturday (21, early Sunday in Brazil), a man killed 11 people at a Monterey Park nightclub.

This Monday’s crimes took place around 2:20 pm (7:20 pm in Brasilia) on two farms near Half Moon Bay, located about 48 km from San Francisco. The victims have not been identified, but councilor Debbie Ruddock said they were Chinese agricultural workers.

The suspect, identified as Zhao Chunli, 67, was detained. He was found in a car in a police station parking lot. Authorities said the man was taken into custody without incident and that a gun was found in the vehicle. The motivation for the attacks is being investigated.

The crimes took place at a time when the population is mourning the attack in Monterey Park, where 65% of the population is of Asian descent. At least 11 people died and 9 were injured. It is not yet known if the cases are somehow related.

“Two hours ago I met colleagues on the Capitol steps for a vigil for the victims of the Monterey Park shooting,” wrote Marc Berman, Representative from California, on social media. “Before we even have a chance to mourn them, there is yet another mass shooting – this time in Half Moon Bay.”

California Governor Gavin Newsom said he was at the hospital meeting with victims of the Monterey Park attack when he received news of the new incident. “Tragedy upon tragedy,” he said. President Joe Biden stated that local authorities will receive all necessary assistance for the crimes to be investigated.

The Monterey Park attack sparked a wave of fear among Asian-Americans and jeopardized US Lunar New Year festivities. Other cities sent agents to beef up security in the city on Sunday, and the celebrations were called off.

The motives for Saturday’s attack are also unknown. Suspect Huu Can Tran, 72, of Asian descent, committed suicide after being surrounded by police. On Monday, witnesses said that the man gave dance lessons at the crime scene and that he had explosive behavior.

The cases add to the history of gun massacres in the country. According to the research group Gun Violence Archive, which monitors gun violence in the US, 38 mass shootings were recorded – when four or more people were shot – from the beginning of the year until this second, which is equivalent to an average of 1. 65 per day.

From 2018 to 2021, the number of sniper attacks in the US has doubled, according to an FBI report released in May. In the first year of the survey, there were 30 actions caused by one or more individuals with the intention of killing in populated areas. In 2021, that number rose to 61.

Also according to the Gun Violence Archive, there were 354 fatal shootings last year. More than 44,000 people died from firearms in the country in 2022, more than half of them from suicide. The US has more guns than people: one in three adults owns at least one such artifact, and nearly one in two adults lives in a household with a gun.
