K-pop group, victim of xenophobia on Raul Gil’s program, speaks out

Raul Gil’s name became one of the most talked about topics on X, formerly Twitter, this Thursday (9), after an interview with the K-pop group, Kard, recalling an episode of xenophobia on the presenter’s program in 2017.

At the time, the idols were in Brazil to promote their new work and were present at the Brazilian attraction. On stage, the veteran said that the members should “open their eyes” and even made double-meaning jokes with the Asian language.

In an interview with the Archive-K channel, on YouTube, one of the vocalists, Jiwoo, opened up about the case, which gained international media attention at the time.

“In the beginning, when I went to Brazil, I suffered a lot of racial discrimination. It was a TV program with a large audience, with a person who was practically the nation’s master of ceremonies, and he was racist,” she said.

Jiwoo explained that he didn’t realize the prejudice at the time and didn’t have the “joke” explained by the translator. “We didn’t realize it at the time. When we did, much later, it hurt a lot. If we had known what was happening, we would have been angry. We might have even walked off the stage.”
