The world was surprised by the release of “Now and Then”, called the Beatles’ “final song” and completed with the help of artificial intelligence. Days after being made available to the public, Paul McCartney has just revealed what the public’s curious reactions to the song have been.
In an interview with The Times, Macca first revealed that he was reluctant to record “Now and Then”. The reason? It was originally written and recorded by John Lennon in 1977, years after the legendary group disbanded.
“It’s strange when you think about it. We have John, in his apartment, playing the piano and recording a demo. And now, we’ve restored it and it’s crystal clear, with a beautiful vocal. But you ask yourself, ‘Is it inferior? Is this something we should have done?’”
Despite the speech, McCartney then revealed that his former band partner, in his view, would have approved the idea and revealed what these fans’ curious reactions to the song have been.
“If I had a chance to ask John, I think he would have loved it. Of course, I don’t know what he would think, but I think my guess is the best we can have. And now, it’s a Beatles song. When we played it to people, some cried, some said, ‘Jesus Christ, it’s a Beatles song!’.”
The legendary musician also stated that, for him, these reactions are a result of the influence that the Beatles still have on the lives of many – including Paul McCartney himself.
“A lot of people are moved by the Beatles – and that feeling still exists. When I remember the Beatles, I remember joy, talent, humor and love. And if people remember us because of those things, then I’m happy.”
Beatles and “Now and Then”
The Beatles’ new song was originally written and composed by John Lennon in 1977. Paul McCartney, George Harrison and Ringo Starr developed the song in the 1990s, when the musician had already left us.
Now, finally, the work was completed by Paul and Ringo — using artificial intelligence technology, which “cleaned” the recording and made it possible to mix. A music video, directed by Peter Jackson, was released on the same day as the release of “Now and Then”.
