Joaquin Phoenix’s Joker Joins The Harley Quinn Animated Series Universe

Character appeared in a special comic in the series!

One of the greatest villains of all time, the joker it has had several versions and adaptations since its creation. One of the most remembered works with the character is his solo film, released in 2019 and directed by Todd Phillips. In it we see Joaquin Phoenix playing a much more “humanized” version of the Clown Prince of Crime – but now, this version of the villain has just joined the universe of the animated series from the harlequin.

Recently, the DC Comics launched Harley Quinn: The Real Sidekicks of New Gotham Special #1a special comic that takes place in the universe of the HBO Max. In the plot, the Joker we already know from this universe is enjoying his new job: he has become the mayor of Gotham City. However, things take a bizarre turn when he receives a call from an alleged other joker.

By arranging a meeting with the “imposter”, we discover that the other Joker is none other than the version lived by Joaquin Phoenix in the 2019 film, with the right to the red jacket and makeup that resembles more classic clowns. The only difference from her cinematic counterpart is her hair, which is a little shorter.

Joker meets Joker!

The two seem to despise each other. The series’ “original” Joker even says what he thinks about his other version: “Every time I see this bastard, he acts like no time has passed. Like we were in that dorm. Not to mention he’s the worst kind of person: a comedian. I’m a clown, there’s a difference. He just has a bunch of dated jokes that don’t make anyone laugh. And believe me – he has the worst fashion sense. He’s always ridiculous.”

The plot explains that the two are old college friends. Eventually, they end up arguing and fighting over their own memories of the past – especially when they take a photograph that shows the two of them standing next to one another. third Joker – which is none other than the version of Jared Leto for Suicide squad. Upon seeing the photo, the Joker from the animated series says: “Thank God that asshole is dead.”

The comic is pretty fun and obviously not part of the movie canon of the jokeralthough it is canonical in the series of harlequin. It is worth remembering that Joaquin Phoenix’s The Clown will return to theaters in Joker: Folie à Deuxa film that should feature its own version of Harley Quinn, played by Lady Gaga.

Harley Quinn: The Real Sidekicks of New Gotham Special #1 is for sale on newsstands in North America, yet to be published in Brazil.
