Back to Black hasn’t even hit Brazilian cinemas yet, but it’s already causing a series of controversies, especially among fans of Amy Winehouse’s career. The British singer, author of the celebrated album that gives the biopic its title, died prematurely in 2011, after a life marked by excesses and media persecution.

However, it is already known that Back To Black makes some questionable narrative choices to say the least. How to exclude the presence of producer Mark Ronson, a decisive figure in Amy’s career. And recently, one of the artist’s best friends spoke out, harshly criticizing the film, stating that Amy “deserved much more”.

For those who want to really delve into the trajectory of a personality, biopics don’t always do justice to all the complexity of real life. Fortunately, fans of Amy Winehouse, as well as the general public, have had a critically acclaimed and Oscar-winning documentary since 2015. Amy, a film directed by Asif Kapadia, received a rating of 4 here at QuandoCinema. And it won the Oscar in the Best Documentary category in 2016.

The feature film follows the young artist since her adolescence, when Amy Winehouse was already demonstrating her vocal talent to her family. At the age of 18, she was already performing in England and, over time, she began to gain fame. The success of the album Back to Black made her a worldwide celebrity, but it also caused her problems with alcohol and drugs to increase exponentially.

The documentary brings together extensive archival footage, including personal home videos, as well as looks at the journey Amy took to break into the music industry and become a Grammy-winning superstar in 2008.

Currently, Amy is only available to rent on Apple TV+. Back To Black, in turn, opens on May 15th, in theaters.
