‘Transe’ is the new Brazilian feature film starring Luisa Arraes, Johnny Massaro, and Ravel Andrade. He proposes a mix of the documentary genre with fiction and recalls not only the political tension of the 2018 elections, but also how the vote interfered with the characters’ relationships. In an interview with Estúdio CBN, the film’s directors, Carolina Jabor and Anne Pinheiro Guimarães report the creative process of the project, and the love journey of the trio of characters who share the same name as the actors.

The plot follows the three actors, who are experiencing a three-year period, on the eve of the 2018 presidential elections, with the imminent victory of a far-right candidate. Furthermore, the saga also recalls the arrival of the manifestation of He no, adopted by several people across the country, and which contributed to the intensification of political tensions at the time. Carol Jabor explained that the idea for the project came mainly from the anguish she felt at the time regarding the election results, not to mention the desire to talk about the presence and influence of young people during the period.

‘In 2018, we were experiencing collective anguish. And that was when the EleNão movement began and the need, the desire to take to the streets, not only participate, but act in some way. We talked a lot about making a film… What film could we make together? We had just worked together on a series. And the desire to talk about young people, like that… So that’s where everything came together.’

‘And the intensity of the moment too, right? We were alone, we were very, very, very thinking about politics, understanding that what we were experiencing was very serious and very unique and a desire to understand better.’ Reported.

Anne Pinheiro Guimarães also spoke about the process of mixing fiction with scenes of real events, such as the manifestation of He no which is present in the film. For her, the idea of mixing fiction with the documentary genre was to transform ‘Trance’ into a feature film that would deal with the tension of reality.

‘I think that from the beginning the idea was not to blur, it was to try to make a film that reflected a reality and that also dealt with a fiction that we created while national events were unfolding.’ He declared.

‘Trance’ also follows the love story of the three main characters who are having a threesome. According to Anne, the idea was mainly to share the trio’s ‘free love’ process, as well as showing the power of national politics in relationships.

‘Beyond politics, it’s a film about love, right? And about the free love between these three. And how does this develop within a national political reality and how will this reality influence these three in the relationship of these young hedonists at the beginning and who are learning or will awaken to reality, to politics and to the national reality and how each one reacts differently.’
