With recent failures of Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania and The Marvels, many blame superhero movie fatigue.

With recent failures in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, which include Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania and The Marvels, there’s been a lot of talk about how this is related to superhero movie fatigue – but the directors of Avengers: Endgame don’t agree that this be the real problem of the franchise.

Marvel and Superhero Fatigue: Kevin Feige Explains How They Can Avoid One of the Biggest Criticisms Their Films Get

Joe Russo told GamesRadar+ that Marvel’s current failures are related to a shift in audiences that affects the film industry as a whole, not just superhero franchises. “I think it’s a reflection of the current state of everything. We still don’t know how they’re going to receive stories going forward or what kind of stories they’re going to want. There’s a big generational divide in how you consume media”explains.

“There is a generation that is used to set times and going to the cinema on a certain date to see something, but they are getting older. Meanwhile, the new generation thinks ‘I want it now, I want to process it now’, and then move on to next thing… It’s a time very different from any other”adds the director.

Anthony Russo took the opportunity to make it clear that he does not agree with the idea of superhero fatigue to explain what is happening with Marvel productions.

I think it’s tiredness in general. The issue of superhero fatigue existed long before the work we were doing. So it’s kind of an eternal complaint, like we always used to bring it up in our early days with superhero work. People used to complain about Westerns the same way, but they lasted decades and decades and decades. They were continually reinvented and taken to new heights as they advanced

The Russo brothers, Joe and Anthony, were responsible for some of the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s biggest hits, before the franchise dealt with these recent box office failures. They directed Captain America: The Winter Soldier (2014), Captain America: Civil War (2016), Avengers: Infinity War (2018) and Avengers: Endgame (2019).
