Globo News will show today at 11pm the documentary that narrates the saga of the Martins family in China during the Cultural Revolution; brothers of the journalist whose life is narrated in the film were businessmen in Maringá

An award-winning journalist, Jayme Martins was head of reporting for the newspaper “Última Hora” in São Paulo, and was a correspondent in China for “O Globo”, “O Estado de S. Paulo” and SBT. His life and that of his family are featured in the 77-minute documentary “A Ponte de Bambu”, made in 2021.

Jayme, who was arrested by the military dictatorship, is the last of a family of five brothers: Claudio, André, José and Gregório, the latter two with connections to Maringá. They lived and worked here. José and Gregório became entrepreneurs in the dairy sector. Gregório, who died at the age of 75, in Santa Catarina, in July 2010, also worked in municipal administration, having been administrative manager of the Municipal Transport Department.

Directed by Marcelo Machado, “The Bamboo Bridge” documents the experience of a Brazilian family who lived for many years in China. “Contrasting two very different realities, the documentary focuses especially on everyday life and ordinary citizens in the face of major external events. It proposes a reflection on how we deal with our daily lives in unfamiliar environments and how history interferes with the direction of our lives”, says the synopsis.

The documentary was released at a cinema in Jundiaí (SP). Jayme Martinez is 90 years old, lives in the interior of São Paulo and will undergo surgery today.
