The way John and Jane Smith know each other and deal with their work has undergone several changes in the production of Prime Video, which has Glover and Francesca Sloanethe same duo behind Atlanta.

In this article, you will understand the main differences between the film and the Mr. and Mrs. Smith series:

Does Mr. and Mrs. Smith have the same story as the Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie movie?

Despite being an adaptation, the film’s story is practically the opposite of that of the series. In the Prime Video production, John (Donald Glover) and Jane (Maya Erskine) accept a job at an agency to carry out espionage and assassination missions. As part of the process, they must abandon their names and their family, to live a new life as an arranged couple.

In other words, right away, John and Jane need to live as a couple without even knowing each other, which makes their relationship have a completely different starting point.

In the film, John (Brad Pitt) and Jane (Angelina Jolie) act as professional assassins working for rival agencies. They meet by chance during a mission in Colombia and fall in love. Shortly afterwards, they get married and live for five years keeping the secret that they have a double life from each other, until they accidentally discover the truth during a mission in which they both have the same target.

Are there references to the Mr. and Mrs. Smith movie in the series?

Yes, there are references to the film in the Prime Video production, especially in moments where John and Jane talk and get to know each other. In the first episode, John and Jane tell each other how many people they killed on duty, repeating a dialogue between Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt in the film.

In an interview with Screen Rant, series co-creator Francesca Sloane stated: “I think there are connections in some ways. In a very distant way, (the series) lives in the same universe (as the film). We tried to put some references when they meet other characters, it’s similar to the movie. Something like that.”

The series will also feature moments such as couples therapy. “Anything that felt funny but very true was something we wanted to utilize,” she said.
