The director of the “Dune” saga films, Denis Villeneuve, stated that the adaptations under his command will end with the third film, “The Messiah of Dune”. The filmmaker’s statement came in an interview with the magazine Team.

The first two films — the second opens in theaters on February 29 — were inspired by Frank Herbert’s novel. The third film is based on the 1969 sequel. There are, in total, seven books about the story.

“’Dune Messiah’ [título original da obra no inglês] It should be the last Dune film for me,” he said in the interview. The filmmaker also classified Frank Herbert’s subsequent books as more “esoteric”.

According to TeamVilleneuve wants to make other films: an adaptation of Cleopatra, by Stacy Schiff, and one of the classic “Rendezvous With Rama”, by Arthur C. Clarke.

Denis Villeneuve has already stated that the third film was a personal desire. “If I can make a trilogy, that would be the dream,” he said, in August last year, to Empire Magazine.

In December, he told Variety that the script for the third film was almost ready.

Actress Zendaya, who plays the character Chani, also expressed her desire to return to the cast in a third film.
