A screening of the Oscar-nominated film, ‘The Rejected’had an unusual outcome when the cinema employees simply forgot that the session was in progress and left, leaving customers locked inside the room.
The incident occurred in Botafogo, in the south of Rio de Janeiro, where around 40 people were trapped in the session held last Saturday, 27th, at Estação Net Rio. The situation took approximately 30 minutes until the group was freed.
“At that moment, we just wanted freedom. We didn’t know how to proceed. It was as if we were orphans there. Look, what a drama, right? We were left without action, desperate. We had just watched the movie “The Rejected”. And we feel like this: rejected”said the retiree Ruth Kauffmann70 years old, to the newspaper O Globo.
According to reports, the group realized something was wrong when the end credits rolled and the lights weren’t turned on as usual. Desperate, spectators looked for the exit door in the dark, using cell phone flashlights. In the cinema lobby, they discovered that the place was locked.
The group contacted the police, firefighters and even shouted at anyone passing by on the street; Luckily, two employees were at another cinema on the same street.
The employees’ justification was that they believed that all projections had already been completed.
“It was terrible, and no one imagined it could happen. After 40 years in business, if we had done this more than once, we wouldn’t be working now. We’ve been digesting the matter all week. Imagine if these people had spent the night inside? I have nightmares just thinking about it.”declared Adriana RattesFounding Partner of Grupo Estação.
“In addition to the apology, we want to try to offer something that is kind to the public, after such a huge inconvenience. It doesn’t mean that we will solve or compensate for this problem… But we want to show that, yes, we are very concerned about what happened, upset”he concluded.
