Gerard Butler was once seen as a Greek general in a leather apron. Or like the Phantom of the Opera. But as a “machine gun pastor”? That’s exactly what the action thriller Redemption – Machine Gun Preacher in the original – offers. The story is not the result of an imaginative screenwriter’s mind, but is based on a real experience that even became a book.

An action film in which Gerard Butler saves children from unbelievable massacres

Redemption centers on motorcyclist Sam Childers, from Pennsylvania, who upon leaving prison converted after leading a life full of drugs and violence. After having a vision, he decides to build an orphanage in war-torn Sudan to protect traumatized children from the sadistic horrors of a bloodthirsty rebel group.

The main character of Machine Gun Preacher actually exists. Since the late 1990s, Sam Childers has built several orphanages in South Sudan, Uganda and Ethiopia. He described his experiences in 2009 in his book Another Man’s War.

Despite the intriguing and, for some, moving story, many religious people considered that the film portrays more violence than Sam Childers’ spiritual journey, which is still true. Thinking about it this way, the translation of the title for the Brazilian version could even be seen as a little misleading.
