With the hype surrounding Barbie, it wasn’t long before director Greta Gerwig was hired for the next big brand. She will re-release The Chronicles of Narnia for Netflix, scheduled for release in 2025.

Even before the (serial) remakes of the successful Harry Potter and Twilight franchises were announced, Netflix revealed that it was also working on a new film adaptation of a popular young adult fantasy saga: The Chronicles of Narnia.

The work will be revisited by the streaming service in the form of several films and, possibly, also series. And the command of this gigantic project will be in the hands of director Greta Gerwig, who directed the mega-hit Barbie this year. She was in charge of producing two new Narnia films.

In an interview with the website Collider, Netflix’s film chief, Scott Stuber, revealed that they are working full steam ahead to bring the plans to fruition. According to this, filming is expected to begin in 2024, meaning the first new Narnia film could hit Netflix as early as 2025.

On the other hand, this could mean that all Barbie fans would have to wait longer for the inevitable (although not yet officially announced) sequel. In the worst case scenario, this could even lead to the sequel being made without Greta Gerwig. However, a sequel to Barbie without the filmmaker seems very unlikely.

Will the entire Narnia saga be made into a movie this time?

How things will proceed from there and whether fans of The Chronicles of Narnia will get to see adaptations of all seven volumes of C.S. Lewis’ original this time around, after the first attempt was canceled prematurely following the disappointing box office results of the third film in 2010 (The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader) will certainly depend a lot on the audience numbers of the launch of the reboot on the streaming service.

In general, however, it is still unknown exactly how Gerwig and Netflix will readapt the popular story about the title’s magical kingdom, in which most real-world children go on dangerous adventures. Given Gerwig’s previous work, however, it’s safe to assume that the director will place more emphasis on female characters.
