Starring Hilary Duff, the film directed by Mark Rosman presents a new version of a classic fairy tale

It has been almost 20 years since its release, but even with time it cannot be denied that this film marked an entire generation. The New Cinderella premiered in 2004 and the romantic comedy featured Hilary Duff in a modern version of the classic princess Cinderella tale.

The big teen star of the time, who was successful as Lizzie McGuire on Disney, plays young Sam, a girl who is exploited by her stepmother Fiona, played by Jennifer Coolidge (The White Lotus). Ignoring the difficult times, she feels excited to finally meet her internet boyfriend at the school’s Halloween dance.

ANOTHER Snow White: Film that premieres in 2024 wants to confront “the destructive lies” of Disney’s live-action film with Rachel Zegler

The cast also includes Chad Michael Murray as Austin Ames, Sam’s love interest; in addition to Regina King as Rhonda, his work friend and Dan Byrd as Carter Farrell, his best friend. The film directed by Mark Rosman was not as successful and only had an 11% rating on the Rotten Tomatoesbeing criticized by some as a “simple and lazy narrative”.

Even so, The New Cinderella ended up gaining a sequence of films in which new characters were introduced under the same premise. Thus, five other productions were launched between 2008 and 2021, which resulted in a feature film starring none other than Selena Gomez.

The New Cinderella franchise

With the Brazilian title Another Tale of the New Cinderella, the second film in the franchise with Selena Gomez was released in 2008 and featured Drew Seeley, Jane Lynch and Katharine Isabelle. Three years later it was the turn of Lucy Hale, known for her work on Pretty Little Liars, to star in A New Cinderella: Once Upon a Song, alongside Freddie Stroma and Missi Pyle.

In 2016, The New Cinderella: If the Shoe Fits brought actress Sofia Carson (Descendants) as Tessa, a young woman who dreamed of becoming a pop star in a plot perfect for fans of the musical. The New Cinderella: Christmas Miracle was the fifth film in the franchise that reached the public in 2019. With Laura Marano, actress who became known for her participation in Austin and Ally and The Perfect Date, the production also featured Gregg Sulkin and Isabella Gomez.

The last film in the franchise came in 2021 with Bailee Madison (Pretty Little Liars: Original Sin). The New Cinderella: Superstar was directed by Michelle Johnston and in addition to Bailee, the cast also included Michael Evans Behling and April Telek. In the story, the actress is Finley Tremaine, a farmer from a small town who sees the opportunity to become a star when a Hollywood team arrives in the region.
