The director’s chair is vacant, because franchise veteran David Yates has already declared that he will not occupy that position.

Although casting for the new Harry Potter series on HBO Max is scheduled to begin in 2024, information about the franchise’s reboot is still scarce. Although novelist JK Rowling has been confirmed as executive producer of the series, it is not yet known which other creative minds will be behind the project – as the writers and directors have not yet been officially announced.

It’s no surprise that filmmaker David Yates was considered: he was responsible for the last four episodes of Harry Potter and also directed all three films in the Fantastic Beasts series. This makes Yates one of the people who played a key role in shaping the franchise – even beyond the original Harry Potter film series. Almost no one is as familiar with the fantasy series as he is.

In fact, Yates recently commented that he wouldn’t rule out the franchise completely. However, the director explained that this does not include the Harry Potter series on HBO Max.

COMPLETED HOGWARTS AFTER 7 MOVIES

As Yates explained in an interview with ComicBook.com, he has no interest in a return to Hogwarts: “You know what? Honestly, I couldn’t be involved [com a série] no way.”

“It’s simple: I spent a lot of time at this school, in the corridors, in the classrooms and it was a great experience that I will always cherish. But going back and spending another year or two there… I feel like I’m tired of it. Being sitting in the back of a van with the [produtor] Lawrence [Grey] From Atlanta to Savannah, directing a drama, is more interesting to me now than walking the hallowed halls of Hogwarts.” Yates is referring to Netflix’s Mafia of Pain.

Even though he is not involved in the Harry Potter series, the British director only wishes his successor well: “I wish the series all the best, it will be great to see how it all works with a new generation. I believe it will be challenging but exciting for everyone involved. It was an incredible experience for me, as well as the other filmmakers on the project, and it will be for the next generation of filmmakers as well.”

David Yates follows the thoughts of Daniel Radcliffe, who also recently stated that he would like to give full priority to a new generation and would not even consider a cameo in the HBO series. Rupert Grint and Emma Watson also spoke out against participating in the series.
