Last Wednesday (1) Netflix subscribers were treated to a new action and comedy film. We are talking about The Thieves (Voleusesin the original), French feature film directed by Mélanie Laurent who also stars in the work alongside two other important actresses: Adèle Exarchopoulos (Blue is the hottest color) and Manon Bresch (A Reason to Fight). At the moment, The Thieves leads the streaming giant’s top 10 most watched films.
The Thieves is an adaptation of a French comic called “La Grande Odalisque”, released in 2012 and tries to bring new air to the action genre, especially to films centered on elaborate robberies.
“Tired of living in hiding, a professional thief decides to retire. But only after one last robbery with her partner in crime and a new getaway driver”, says the official synopsis of the new Netflix film.
But, after all, how does it end The Thieves? Can Carole make it out alive? Below, see a summary of the film’s outcome!
The Thieves: ending of the Netflix film explained
As you may already know, the three main characters of The Thieves plan a major theft of a valuable painting, called “La Grande Odalisque”, from an arts center on the island of Corsica. However, things end up not going as well as they expected, as several obstacles appear unexpectedly along the criminals’ path.
In the end, they manage to carry out the robbery, but Carole (Laurent), apparently, dies in a confrontation with the police. And it’s worth remembering: she was pregnant and had decided to keep the baby, which makes everything even more surprising. However, in a twist like that, we discovered that Carole didn’t really die and just faked her own death to escape the authorities.
The plot twist reveals that Carole, with the help of a mysterious figure (who the film doesn’t explore much), was able to plan her own death in a fantastic way, even simulating a police operation. Therefore, viewers didn’t even have much doubt about Carole’s tragic fate.
Four years after the robbery of “La Grande Odalisque”, Sam and Alex go to a house in the desert and, there, are welcomed by a child named Raoule. The young woman is Carole’s daughter, who was in the residence living in secret for these four years. And this meeting between all the women of The Thievesof course, brings a happy and emotional ending to the film.
