80s crime film inspired Marvel directors in Avengers: Endgame.
Responsible for some of the best science fiction in cinema, director Ridley Scott has unforgettable works on his resume, but while films like Alien and Blade Runner are always mentioned, his other productions tend to be a little more “forgotten” – well, not for those director Joe and Anthony Russo. The brothers responsible for some of Marvel’s biggest hits brought the filmmaker’s inspiration to Avengers.
And we’re not talking about just any scene, but one of the most memorable in Avengers: Endgame. In the film, after losing his entire family, Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner) becomes a mercenary vigilante, who hunts villains in the early hours of Tokyo, Japan. This plot is inspired by the comics, but the look has a hint of Black Rain, Ridley Scott film released in 1989.
In the annotated version of Endgame, the Russos talk about their inspiration. “It was like the neon look of Black Rain,” says Joe Russo (via SlashFilm).
Black Rain: What’s the story?
Ridley Scott’s film follows the protagonists Nick Conklin (Michael Douglas) and Charlie Vincent (Andy Garcia), two New York police detectives who find themselves involved in a civil war between members of the Japanese Yakuza mafia.
They have arrested one of the killers and are ordered to take him back to Japan, but when they get there they let him escape. In an attempt to recapture him, the detectives find themselves increasingly involved in the criminal underworld.
Chuva Negra is available to rent on Amazon Prime Video and Apple TV+.
