SPECIAL FOR THE STATE – Going from a clever comedy about two teenage friends to a dystopian period thriller with action scenes is quite a leap. But that was the way Olivia Wilde made, from her directorial debut in Outstanding (2019) to his second feature, Do not worry, dearwho arrived this Thursday, 22, in Brazil.
The actress-turned-director and screenwriter Katie Silberman started working on the project during the government of Donald Trump, or “Make America Great Again”, as the former president’s slogan said. “We asked what exactly that meant,” Wilde told a press conference at the Venice Film Festival, where the film was screened out of competition.
Wearers of red caps with this inscription have a nostalgia for the 1950s and 1960s, when white men, heterosexuals, middle classhad a certain status, which they believe they lost with the achievement of rights by women, people of color and LGBTQ+.
In the story, Alice (Florence Pugh, excellent) is a happy 1950s housewife. She lives in a beautiful house, cooks five-course dinners and is in love with her husband, Jack (Harry Styles), who works on the top-secret Project Victory. The film was, however, devoured by issues that have nothing to do with its quality or lack thereof. A few days before the premiere in Venice, Shia LaBeouf, who would play Jack and has a history of problematic behavior, asked Olivia Wilde to correct the information that she had fired him for his work methods. According to LaBeouf, he was the one who asked to leave. The actor leaked text and video messages in which the filmmaker tried to convince him to stay.
There were also rumors that Wilde, who started a romance with Styles during the filming, would have fallen out with Florence Pugh, who did not attend the press conference in Venice, going only to the gala session.
All this meant that the director had to explain herself over and over again. On Wednesday night, the 21st, she went to the program The Late Showin Stephen Colbert, and said that his messages to LaBeouf were an attempt to mediate the complicated relationship between the two actors. Who, in the end, ended up opting for Florence Pugh. She even pointed out that none of this would be happening if she were a man. “Directors are often praised for their tyranny on set,” she concluded. Wrong, she is not.
