On September 23, Alagoas will join the International Network of tributes to one of the greatest trombone geniuses, the Brazilian Raul de Souza, who died in 2021. The event, which will be hosted at the Natural History Museum of the Federal University of Alagoas – MHN /UFAL, from 8 pm, will have the Rony Ferreira Quartet on stage, and a series of guests such as Wilma Araújo, Almir Medeiros, Everaldo Borges, Ricardo Lopes, among others. The event is part of the national program of the “16th Spring of Museums”.

Raul de Souza was one of the greatest trombonists in the world. Carioca, he stood out with samba-jazz compositions, a scenario in which he attracted critical attention, which boosted a respected international career, especially in France, where he died, and in the United States, where he lived in the 70s.

Artistically named by Ari Barroso, the musician is recognized for his swinging improvisation, samba-jazz and for being the inventor of the “souzabone”, a trombone with four valves, one more than the traditional instrument.

Raul has worked with Sérgio Mendes, Flora Purim, Airto Moreira, Milton Nascimento, Sonny Rollins, Cal Tjader and the jazz fusion band Caldera. He has also shared the stage with Pixinguinha, Baden Powell, Tom Jobim, Zimbo Trio, Paulo Moura, Milton Nascimento, Djavan, Maria Bethânia, Hermeto Pascoal and Egberto Gismonti.

Tribute in Alagoas

The musician from Paraná, Glauco Solter, who for many years played bass with Raul de Souza, organized a series of events and shows entitled Viva Raul Souza. The tributes and tributes will take place between August 4th and October 29th in several places such as São Paulo, Curitiba, France and Switzerland, and on September 23rd it’s Alagoas’ turn. The event is organized by the MHN and the Théo Brandão Museum (MTB).

The show at MHN/UFAL will be hosted by the quartet led by the trombonist from Alagoas, Rony Ferreira, 1st trombone soloist of the Chamber Orchestra of the Federal University of Alagoas, who will receive, during the show, some of the biggest names in Alagoas music in special appearances. . The show will be free.

UFAL Natural History Museum

The Natural History Museum (MHN) of the Federal University of Alagoas (Ufal) completed 32 years of existence last May 7th, dedicating itself to research and extension, taking local knowledge to other parts of the country and the world, in addition to winning over the community with themes ranging from the presentation of its collection to environmental conservation.

In these 32 years, the MHN/UFAL has become known and close, not only to students and researchers, but also to the community in general, with the holding of various events, such as the Weekend at the Museum editions, which were suspended due to the Covid-19 pandemic, in addition to cultural events and musical shows. The show in honor of trombonist Raul de Souza marks the reopening of this cycle of artistic events that brings the Alagoan community closer to the Museum.

Theo Brandão Museum

The Théo Brandão Museum of Anthropology and Folklore (MTB) is a cultural facility of the Federal University of Alagoas (UFAL). The MTB was created on August 20, 1975 and initially installed in the Pontal da Barra neighborhood, in Maceió.

The name of the Museum is a tribute to the professor, doctor and folklorist Theotônio Brandão Vilela, whose collection of popular art was donated to Ufal. In addition to the permanent exhibition, the Museum carries out extension activities, such as workshops, lectures, courses, artistic presentations, short-term exhibitions, lives, among many other cultural events.

In 2020, MTB represented Alagoas in “Brazil in numbers”, an annual publication of the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE). In the following year, Théo Brandão was highlighted in the publication of Turma da Mônica, in which the Museum is the setting for well-known characters.

Museum Spring

The “Museum Spring” is an annual season of events, coordinated by the Brazilian Institute of Museums (Ibram), which takes place every year at the beginning of the homonymous season, with the aim of promoting and valuing Brazilian museums, encouraging visitation and of museums with society.

In 2022, the events will be held together with the celebrations of the Bicentennial of the Independence of Brazil. According to Ibram, this year’s theme, “Independence and Museums: 200 Others, Other Stories”, proposes to renew the perspectives on this historical fact, from the perspective of cultural diversity, freedom of thought, inclusion, the plurality of experiences and interpretations.
