Santa Catarina will carry out a project to assess in greater depth the causes for the high occurrence of suicides in the state.
The work envisages the implementation of innovative methodologies to track the path that suicide victims have taken with the health system.
After authorization from the Ministry of Health, the schedule will extend for 6 months and intends to collect information for the construction of public policies to confront and reduce suicide rates in Santa Catarina.
The project takes place during the actions of the September Yellow suicide prevention campaign, which this year has the motto “Life is the best choice! ”.
Another important support for suicide prevention is provided by the Centro de Valorização da Vida, with around 3,000 volunteers who receive more than 10,000 calls a day by phone 188.
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), worldwide, suicide is a higher cause of death than those caused by HIV, malaria, breast cancer, wars and homicides.
Although the numbers are decreasing around the world, countries in the Americas are going against this trend, according to the World Health Organization.
In Brazil, the records approach 14 thousand cases per year.
