In order to reduce police violence and protect the security agent, the Public Security Secretariat decided to adopt a short-term strategy.
In agreement with the Military Police, members of the 1st Battalion of the PM started to use body cameras that are attached to the uniform. The use of the equipment is seen as a strong ally of the military police themselves, who are often accused of brutality, without having practiced it.
According to Lieutenant Colonel Jokebed, commander of the 1st Battalion, there is today a demand for the transparency of police work, and even for the policeman himself, in order to prove a correct work, the need to present images as evidence is important. of your performance.
The official points out that for now the use of body cameras is in an experimental phase and will be evaluated if it really meets what the corporation and the population want. That’s why it was used for now only one brand of body camera.
There are at least five companies in the industry in the queue to put their products on the market. This mechanism has been used by large corporations in much of the country.
The equipment was part of a pilot plan. From now on, the top management of the Public Security Secretariat will carry out a study to assess the feasibility of acquiring the material. Military police in São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro have been using these cameras for a long time.
Lieutenant Colonel Jokebed said that for the time being it is not possible to make a broader assessment. It’s just that the cameras had problems during the transmission of the images, which without a doubt is something that comes to add and strengthen the work of the corporation.
“Certainly these images will provide support to support what the police officer said in the police report, when the prisoner was handed over, for example”, concluded the commander of the 1st BPM.
