Civil Defense issues ‘red alert’ in DF because of low air humidity | Federal District

The Civil Defense issued a “Red alert” in the Federal District, in the early afternoon of this Sunday (4), because of the low air humidity. According to the National Institute of Meteorology (Inmet), the index reached 9% on Saturday (3) and, this Sunday, until noon, it was 13% in the region of Gamma.

According to meteorologists, the humidity in the air could drop even further. The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends 60% as an ideal index.

The “Red Alert” represents “great danger”, according to the scale of the Civil Defense. There is 120 days it doesn’t rain in the Federal District.

What to do to minimize the risks?

The Civil Defense of the DF guides the residents of Brasília to maintain some precautions such as:

  • Increase fluid intake to maintain body hydration: drink water, natural juices, coconut water and carry, whenever possible, a bottle for fluid replacement
  • Moisten the nostrils and eyes with saline
  • Using lip balms and body creams to prevent skin dryness
  • Use air humidifiers, buckets or basins with water or wet cloths to raise the humidity of the air indoors
  • Keep the environments clean, avoiding dust accumulation and favoring mites and fungi, to reduce allergic crises
  • Give priority attention to children and the elderly and monitor hydration and signs of respiratory illness
  • Reduce or suspend, if possible, physical activities during the hottest periods of the day
  • Give preference to light meals
  • Wear light clothing, a hat or cap
