By Paulo Moreira Leite, 247 – It was this Thursday, September 1, at an event with Culture professionals, in Belém do Pará, that Lula made one of the fundamental pronouncements of the 2022 campaign.

In a sentence that can be summarized in a single paragraph, he made clear the boundary that separates his government project from the proposals of the other candidates:

“Brazil was the 12th largest economy in the world. We left this country as the 6th economy in the world, now it has gone back to the 13th. And we only talk about market, market, market and market. The market that interests me is the one that women enter to buy food and that, many times, they are not able to take what they have the right to take”, said Lula.

Simply put, the question is this. Formed by the hard life reserved for the country’s working majority, Lula never rejected the rules of the market economy, one of the fundamental universes of the capitalist economy.

But he was always clear, as a public man, to do what he could to protect the interests and needs of the men and women who earn their living from their work.

He was like this as a union leader, where he led memorable strikes and mobilizations, whether as president of the Republic, in governments of historic value.

In 2022, when criticizing those who speak of “market, market, market”, Lula once again makes clear his place in the face of the ideological melody of our time, orchestrated by a ruling class organized to put a damper on the main achievements of workers and people of the world.

He recalls that the subject of his government – or of his history – are those mistreated by the misery of the world, like women who go to the market “to buy food and often cannot take what they are entitled to”, in a suffering that all citizen and every citizen up to date with their own human condition can often witness in the country of Bolsonaro, Paulo Guedes, in short, of the “market, market, market.”

At the same meeting, Lula made a direct criticism of the “Expenditure Ceiling”, an instrument of financial capital to impose, down the throat, its interests over the needs and rights of the majority. Work of the Temer-Meirelles government, implemented after the parliamentary coup that overthrew Dilma Rousseff, in a devastation that includes the labor reform and the destruction of the Social Security, the Teto subordinates programs to stimulate economic growth and the generation of jobs to the profits of banks and other financial institutions, which thus became masters of the country’s destinies. The result is on the street, in plain sight: hunger and record unemployment.

This is the debate that interests Brazilians.
