Christmas takes place this Saturday (3) the D-Day of polio (or polio) vaccination In addition to the health posts, the Municipal Health Department (SMS) made extra points available with extended hours for immunization. (see further below).

Children can be vaccinated from 1 year to less than 5 years of age. It is necessary for parents or guardians to appear with vaccination card and photo ID.

During the week, vaccination also takes place in all vaccination rooms of the Basic Health Units (UBS), from Monday to Friday, as well as in the extra points of the municipality, from Monday to Saturday.

According to SMS, even before D-Day only 6% of the target audience had been vaccinated against polio during this year’s campaign. The index is considered low.

“The rate is very low, in the state as a whole, in the country, in fact. In recent years, we have already been noticing this drop in vaccination rates. And in the pandemic this drop was accentuated. The idea now is to recover, remove this delay and call the population to seek vaccination, especially for polio”, explained the municipal health secretary, George Antunes.

Immunization against polio will be worked on within the project ‘Vaccinating with Natal’, a permanent initiative of the Nucleus of Immune Preventable Diseases (NAI) of the Department of Health Surveillance (DVS) of Natal, which aims to intensify a routine vaccine every month.

Poliomyelitis (infantile paralysis) is an acute contagious disease caused by a virus that can infect children and adults and in severe cases can lead to paralysis in the lower limbs. Vaccination is the only form of prevention. All children under five must be vaccinated. As a result of the intensification of vaccination, in Brazil there has been no circulation of wild poliovirus (polio) since 1990.
