The agriculture sector recorded a drop of 2.5% in the first half of 2022, compared to the same period last year. According to data on the performance of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP), released this Thursday (1st), by the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE), the drop is the result of the low performance in the production of significant crops in the last six months. .

The lowest performance recorded was in soybean production, equivalent to -12.0%, followed by rice, with -8.5%. The negative indices ended up hiding the growth of corn, which had an increase of up to +27% in the harvest, as well as coffee, with +8.6%.

Despite the negative record for agriculture, according to the IBGE, there was also a positive contribution from livestock to the sector, mainly due to cattle.

The fall in agriculture in the first half of the year, however, as pointed out by the Department of Agriculture, Livestock, Irrigation, Fisheries and Aquaculture of Bahia (Seagri-BA), does not apply to the agriculture sector in Bahia.

“Based on studies by the Superintendence of Economic and Social Studies of Bahia (SEI) Bahia’s agribusiness GDP reached r$ 22.7 billion in the first quarter of this year. The value represents 24.3% of the state GDP for the period, exceeding the 24% of 2021”, informed the superintendent of the folder, Claudemir Nonato.

In addition, according to Seagri, the result for the second quarter of 2022 has not yet been published, however, the ministry says it believes that for Bahia agribusiness there will be growth, since the performance of the grain harvest in the state points to a growth of 8.2% in relation to the previous harvest, going from 10.5 million tons to 11, which was the highest result of the survey’s historical series for the set of products surveyed.

The highlight of the result, by the way, is soybean, which has already been harvested, with an increase, according to IBGE, of 6%, compared to the previous harvest; corn first crop presents an increase of 15.3% and corn second crop presents an increase of 8.3%, so we expect agribusiness data to have growth.

“We emphasize that the planted and harvested areas were both estimated at 4.3 million hectares (ha), which corresponds, in the IBGE projections, to an expansion of 4.3% in the annual comparison”, highlighted Nonato.

The secretariat also points out that the IBGE figures consolidate the growth trend of the sector in Bahia for the year 2022. “There are considerable advances in most crops, in the field of cereals, oilseeds and legumes”, he guaranteed.

“We emphasize that the agricultural activity is the most important of the Bahian economy and it is on it that the State should focus its efforts to leverage post-pandemic actions, since they did not paralyze their activities”, pointed out the superintendent.

The substantial investments, both from the private and public sectors, according to Seagri, deserve to be highlighted, as they will contribute to the recovery of the economy. “The high market demand will favor the increase in consumption, and agriculture will be very important for this recovery”, he explained.

“Seagri has sought to articulate with all agricultural sectors to facilitate the insertion of new investments in the State”, concluded Nonato.
