Every year, about 700,000 people commit suicide worldwideaccording to data from the World Health Organization (WHO). In Brazil, there are 14 thousand deaths per year or 38 per day.. To draw attention to this reality, reduce the prejudice surrounding the problem and mobilize society in the fight for prevention, the legislative Assembly of Minas Gerais (ALMG) participateonce again from the Yellow September campaign.
From this Thursday (9/1/22) until 9/16, the Palácio da Inconfidência will be lit in yellowin allusion to the World Suicide Prevention Day, celebrated on 9/10.
“Life is the best choice!” is the motto chosen for this year’s national campaign. ALMG’s adhesion to the movement is part of the Laços da Consciência project, which brings together awareness-raising actions on topics related to the social well-being of miners, especially causes related to health, associating these causes with the colors used in the lighting of the Legislative headquarters.
Suicide is considered a public health issue, exacerbated by the isolation imposed by the Covid-19 pandemic. The campaign comes to alert to the importance of mental health care.
According to the Yellow September national website, nearly 100% of suicides are related to mental illness, especially those undiagnosed or treated incorrectly. So, these cases could be avoided with access to psychiatric treatment and quality information.
Another data points out that, although the number of cases has been falling worldwide, with an average global drop of 36% between 2000 and 2019, in the Americas region there was an increase of 17% in the same period. Attention to the signs of problems, listening without judgment, empathy and the search for quality information and treatment are actions that can save a patient.
Legislature proposes rules on the subject
Since 2015, ALMG has supported the Yellow September movement, led by institutions such as the Minas Gerais and Brazilian Psychiatry Associations, the Federal Council of Medicine (CFM), the Center for Valuing Life (CVV), among others. Worldwide, the International Association for Suicide Prevention encourages the spread of the cause.
The Legislature also has initiatives such as the State Week for Valuing Life, established by Law 22,836, of 2018, and the state policy of valuing life in the state education network, dealt with in Law 23,764, of 2021. Suicide prevention and the mental health promotion are also themes of Laws 24,134 and 24,091, both of 2022, the latter aimed at civil and military police.
In addition to ALMG, other institutions in several Brazilian cities should also light up in yellow. In Belo Horizonte there is also a forecast of activities throughout the month of September, free of charge and open to the public. One of them is the Yellow September Walk, scheduled for 9/10, starting at 9 am, in Praça da Liberdade.
