A crime, provided for in the Brazilian Penal Code, is increasingly recurrent in Sergipe. With penalties ranging from one to five years in prison, the theft of electricity has been increasing throughout the year. To give you an idea, in August of this year alone, more than 5,000 inspections were carried out and 723 irregularities were identified by Energisa Sergipe. Since the beginning of 2022, there have already been more than 4,400 irregular connections.

Actions to combat energy theft are being increasingly intensified by the concessionaire. Among the crimes are the deviation or non-registration by the company because of irregularities in the measurement system by third party intervention and illegal connections, better known as ‘cat’.

“These crimes end up generating risks to people’s safety and lives, in addition to impacting the quality of energy supply, tax collection and company revenue, compromising investments in improvements and services. Consequently, it burdens all customers who pay the bill on time”, explains the coordinator of Measurement and Combat to Energy Losses, Evandro Macedo.

The notification and regularization of fraud and energy theft is of fundamental importance for the quality of electricity supply to all customers. In addition to constant inspections, complaints can be made by society through Energisa’s service channels, and the identity of the person making the complaint is kept completely anonymous.

“The population has noticed that the fight against energy theft is everyone’s duty. This is because a portion of this theft ends up being passed on to the electricity tariff. It is worth noting that anyone can report cases of clandestine connections or tampering with the meters”, comments Evandro.

The coordinator also highlights some risks with carrying out the intervention in the electrical network in an irregular way. “Clandestine and irregular connections are made by people who do not have the technical knowledge, without following safety protocols, using inappropriate materials and, many times, they touch the energized network, causing an accident. In addition to the probability of an accident, it can lead to a lack of energy, causing damage to regular customers”, emphasizes Evandro.

When the fraud is identified, in addition to the regularization and opening of the Occurrence Bulletin, Energisa will charge retroactive amounts, referring to the period of irregularity, that is, what the person used energy but did not pay. The procedures for carrying out this collection are provided for in Aneel Resolution 414/2010.
