The Court of Justice of Minas Gerais released, this Wednesday (31), that rodeos be held again in Minas Gerais. The release was given by the president of the court, the judge José Arthur de Carvalho Pereira Filho.

Six days ago, Judge Michel Curi e Silva, from the 1st Court of the Public Treasury and Municipalities of Belo Horizonte, prohibited the Government of Minas from promoting, carrying out or sponsoring any cultural, sporting or recreational activity that contains the rodeo.

The measure prevented all activities, such as the snare test, the three-drum test (when the pawn rides, in the shortest possible time, under obstacles) and mount. The suspension was overturned by the judge José Arthur de Carvalho, in an appeal made by the state administration.

According to the judge, the federal constitution “recognises the rodeo as a national cultural manifestation, and a Brazilian cultural heritage. The tests are considered, by federal law, traditional equestrian sports.”

Regarding the economic loss, he reinforces that “across the country, there are approximately 1,500 rodeo parties per year, with the 30 largest bringing together about 5.4 million people. In addition, a single rodeo involves around 250 people and, in Minas Gerais, around 40,000 jobs are generated per year in the sector. The rodeo promotes economic, social and cultural development, especially considering that the main activity of most municipalities in Minas Gerais is agribusiness”.

Still on the ban, the judge reinforced that “the State of Minas Gerais does not carry out or promote rodeos, nor does it have the competence to authorize them. In fact, the competence to authorize the realization of rodeos would belong to the municipalities”.
