Workshop held by Inema brings together public institutions that work in wildlife management in Bahia

-

Aligning procedures and training municipal, state and federal public agents in management practices and management of wild fauna in Bahia, it was with this objective that the Institute for the Environment and Water Resources (Inema) carried out, on the 9th and 10/05, the Wild Fauna Workshop: Integrating forces for Management and Management. On the occasion, public policies aimed at conservation and greater integration between institutions that work to protect wild animals were also discussed.

Inema’s veterinarian and Fauna Management coordinator, Vinicius Dantas, highlighted that the training demonstrated the importance of strengthening integration between different institutions. “It was a moment to exchange information and experiences between participants, aiming to align and standardize procedures adopted in the management, identification, rescue, transport and release of wild animals. The significant presence of different bodies, from environmental to public security and the MP, reflects the importance of this workshop for better interaction between entities that work directly or indirectly with environmental protection and wildlife management”.

PRF agent Marcus França congratulated Inema managers and reinforced the need for continued training. “Excellent initiative by Inema to bring together all the actors that make up this network to combat wildlife trafficking in the state, with the involvement of police forces. These are techniques that are routinely used throughout the PRF, when approaching highways, in the seizure and allocation of a large number of animals to the Inema Wild Animal Sorting Center, Cetas”, he pointed out.

The workshop methodology included guidance on how to deal with different species, appropriate procedures for the safe transport of animals and basic preventive care, essential to guarantee the safety of both animals and people who work with fauna management.

Representing the Environmental Secretariat of the municipality of Ibicoara, environmentalist Mateus Matos demonstrated the need to hold these meetings periodically. “These were days of a lot of learning and also of strengthening partnerships with various institutions. We operate in a municipality located in Chapada Diamantina, a stronghold of natural riches and diversity of native species, so the techniques presented here will be of great use in the Secretariat’s routines.”

Inema biologists, Sara Alves and Marianna Pinho, reported that events of this type reinforce Inema’s commitment to the conservation of fauna throughout the Bahian territory. “The institutions that are participating in the workshop are contributing to three specific themes, which are inspection, rescue and disposal, identifying which are the overlapping problems in this action and also the gaps, closing the activities with forwarding solutions and paths to fauna management”, explained Sara.

Marianna added: “the workshop fulfilled its objective of strengthening this wildlife care network throughout the territory of Bahia”.

The event was attended by the Environmental Protection Police Company, the Bahia Military Fire Department, the Federal Highway Police (PRF), the Federal Police, the State Public Ministry, Ibama, environmental technicians and the Civil Guard of the cities of Salvador and Vitória. da Conquista, in addition to employees from the headquarters and regional units of Inema.
