In a video published this Sunday (12), President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) remembered Mother’s Day and showed solidarity with the mothers of Rio Grande do Sul. The state is experiencing the effects of the worst climate tragedy in its history with 143 deaths confirmed by the floods and another 131 people missing.

Until the last bulletin released at noon this Sunday, more than 2.1 million people were affected in 446 municipalities. There are more than 82 thousand people in shelters across the state and another 538 thousand people are homeless.

Amid a series of criticisms that the federal government was being negligent or lacking in helping victims in the state, Lula said that women from Rio Grande do Sul are not alone and spoke of solidarity.

“You are not alone, we are together to recover and rebuild what was destroyed: cities, bridges, highways, but we know that not everything can be recovered. Mothers lost their children and children lost their mothers.”

Lula also said that the best way to honor the memory of those who were lost is to work together, “with what the Brazilian people have to offer: the spirit of unity, solidarity and love for others”.

First Lady Janja Lula da Silva also used social media to spread her message. “On this Mother’s Day, I leave here a message of affection for the mothers of Rio Grande do Sul, and a longing hug for my mother, through all the mothers in our Brazil”, she wrote on X (formerly Twitter).
