Major flood hits Pelotas | GUSTAVO VARA/MUNICIPAL CITY HALL

The fourth most populous city in Rio Grande do Sul, with 325 thousand inhabitants, Pelotas is facing the biggest flood in eight decades, confirming fears that there was a major flood, as warned by MetSul. At 7pm on Sunday, the São Gonçalo channel reached a level it hadn’t recorded in 83 years: 2.88 meters, exactly the height of the historic flood that hit Pelotas in 1941.

The São Gonçalo canal had been growing since 7am on Sunday, but during the early hours of this Monday there was a decline and measurements from the city hall of the city in the south of Rio Grande do Sul indicated an elevation of 2.80 meters early this morning.

The municipality maintains the information that the various areas that were already in the red risk classification for flooding, on the map provided by the City Hall, must evacuate these regions immediately. Leaving people makes it easier for fire crews to rescue themselves in the event of a sudden flood.

The areas with immediate evacuation recommendation are: Laranjal (Santo Antônio, Valverde and Pontal), Colônia Z3, Vila da Palha – Cruzeiro, Recanto de Portugal, Marina Ilha verde, Charqueadas, Umuharama, Estrada do Engenho, Lagos de São Gonçalo, Parque Uma, Navegantes, Ambrósio Perret, Mário Meneghetti, Balsa. Fátima, Village Center JK, Doquinhas, Quadrado, Ceval, Mauá, Loteamento Osório, Pântano and Simões Lopes (backgrounds).

The municipality has eight public shelters, managed by the City Hall. Access is through contact with the Municipality’s Civil Defense, Firefighters, Municipal Guard and Military Brigade through the following contacts: 193 (Firefighters), 153 (Municipal Guard) and 190 (Military Brigade).

The flooding continues throughout the week near Lagoa dos Patos. Depending on the day and according to the wind speed, there will be improvement or worsening in cities such as Pelotas, Rio Grande, São José do Norte and São Lourenço do Sul. Once the Guaíba rises again, the situation will remain critical in the South of Rio Grande do Sul both this week and next week. Depending on how much Guaíba reaches this week, the flood could be even greater next week in the south of Rio Grande do Sul.
