I remember when I was 12 years old and I made a list of things that I thought my mother would love to receive as gifts. I prepared several envelopes and asked her to choose one. She happily asked: in which envelope is the hug that is all I want as a gift? I was very excited at the time and prepared a sequence of hugs that I would give her on Sunday that would be all hers. Today I wonder if she had known about the Historic Event of the Town Hall, maybe she wouldn’t have chosen just the hug”, it says Carla Teixeira, one of the partners of the trendy restaurant with brick walls and whale oil. It really is a special event, which leaves many people teary-eyed at the end of the fully sung Mass that closes the event. “Handel’s Alleluia sung by the Choir is chilling. And Juliana Sucupira’s voice singing Gounod’s Ave Maria is almost a divine breath”states Lourdes Padilhawho was at the event at the beginning of the year, and should now return with his son.

“We want Mother’s Day here at Sobrado to go down in history and we have prepared a radiant moment to be experienced in the Historic Event“, says Carla, proud of the idea that helped transform the region’s frequency on weekends. The historian Nathalia Vivaqua will lead the entire experience, explaining the gastronomy and habits of the late 19th century, both during the meal and banquet and also on a walk through the beautiful region where Dom Pedro II, Machado de Assis and Luiz Gama traveled.
“In addition to the special menu, we will offer sparkling wine so that the toast elevates the love we feel for the extraordinary women who are always with us in the best moments”, score.

The program – a true historical experience – goes far beyond the act of having breakfast in a beautiful and safe area of our Historic Center: a true 19th century banquet – with recipes from the time and even crockery and cutlery from that time – is explained , tim-tim by tim-tim, by the experienced Nathalia. The use of each ingredient becomes understood, as well as how to serve it, and the reason for each thing. We learned, for example, why sweets at the time had so much sugar. It is an opportunity to have contact with foods and juices that are no longer so common today, but were the most common in the last days of the empire.

The event, which has been taking place on selected weekends in the morning since June 2023, now gains a special outfit for moms, both this Saturday and Sunday. The surprise for diners is that the award-winning sparkling wine Alud during the great feast of delicacies 150 years ago, bringing extra glamor to the experience that the restaurant promotes and which has attracted tourists from all over the world for a multifaceted tour that mixes history, religion, gastronomy and tourism.

“The highlight of this café, besides the Mass which is the most beautiful I have ever attended, is the incredible French toast with Port Wine reduction! I have gluten intolerance, I’m not celiac, that is, I can eat it, but I should avoid it. But the smell was already delicious and I, who am not even a big fan of French toast, fell in line. It looked like pudding inside, and the sauce was divine.”celebrates the journalist Quintino Gomes, who has already been to the event twice. Here’s a tip.

The historical experiment promoted by the restaurant does not stop at eating or champagne flutes. After the meal, a one-hour walk through the region called “little Lisbon” reveals many stories about the region. At the end of the tour, with the delicacies already digested, the group arrives at the recently restored Church of Our Lady of Lapa dos Mercadores where, to the sound of the tolling of its bronze giants, you are treated to the best quality classical music, in a spectacular performance by the Coral Astorga and Grand Orchestra, while a Solemn Mass is prayed in Latin with a procession, altar boys, natural flowers decorating the beautiful 18th century altars and lots of sacred silverware and incense. The small church, nicknamed “jewelry box”is always decorated with flowers and is a special case: built in 1750, in the Baroque style, it is one of the most beautiful in the country.

Saturdays and Sundays in the region have been busy due to the great demand from people from all over the country who are interested in hearing the Solemn Mass beautifully sung and which becomes an immersive, historical and faith-filled experience, especially for Catholics.
