Mother’s Day: fairs offer good options in flowers, gastronomy and fashion

With 38 permanent fairs, the Federal District has a range of possibilities for those looking for the ideal gift for Mother’s Day. And not just gifts that please everyone, but also fresh ingredients to make that family lunch on this special date.

The fairs appear in the survey with almost 10% of demand from the public, which, as main purchases, target clothes (23.5%), cosmetics (20.7%) and footwear (17.7%), which together total 61.9 % of choices | Photo: Paulo H. Carvalho/Agência Brasília

“There are more than 80 fairs, including permanent and occasional ones, which are always full of people who find what they are looking for in a pleasant environment and at a good price”, highlights the Government Secretary, José Humberto Araújo. Since 2019, the GDF has allocated more than R$23 million for renovations and maintenance of fairs in the DF.

“It is a market that is renewed every day and, as we strengthen the fairs, there will be more sales, earnings and the ability for people to live their lives through this activity, whether for employment or for their own livelihood”

“It is a market that is renewed every day and, as we strengthen the fairs, there will be more sales, earnings and the ability for people to live their lives through this activity, whether for employment or for their own livelihood”, observes the secretary.

And, depending on the population, there will be no shortage of movement. According to research carried out by the Instituto Fecomércio-DF (IFDF) in 2023 (Mother’s Day Trade can inject around 334 million into the economy of the Federal District), of the 739 consumers interviewed, 79% said they were willing to give gifts to their mothers in 2024, an increase compared to the 73.8% marked in 2023.

Shopkeepers, in turn, expect an average growth of 19.4% in sales and Mother’s Day could generate R$334.5 million in the DF’s economy. The preferred days for purchasing gifts maintained a similar behavior to 2023, being on weekends – with emphasis on Saturday during the afternoon, which has 34.1% of preferences.

For all tastes

The high demand is confirmed by stallholder Laércia Holanda, 50, owner of a store at Feira do Guará. “The highest demand here is for perfumes, moisturizers and also makeup. Even before opening the store, I always came here with my mother. On this date, especially on the Saturday before Mother’s Day, it is very busy”, she reinforces.

Geographer Bruno César dos Santos, 23, was one of those who came forward to guarantee the gift for his mother. When looking for a sandal, he says he chose Feira do Guará because of the variety of options the place offers in terms of clothing and other items. “There are many options, it is close to home and also a traditional place, especially for those who live in the region. I think here I can find something nice for my mother,” he points out.

For those looking to give flowers as a gift, the Feira da Torre de TV and the Feira dos Importados are frequent choices. As for clothes, the highlights are the Feira do Guará, the Feira de São Sebastião and the Feira de Sobradinho. Check the opening hours and addresses of each fair below.

“I’m a big fan of fairs, I think they have specific characteristics. Guará, for example, I think has a cultural and regional arrangement that appeals more to the culinary and fashion side. More than other fairs, like the SIA (Imports Fair), which has a greater emphasis on electronics and technology aspects”, adds Bruno.

Electronics are most sought after at the Imports Fair and the Taguatinga Imports Fair. In terms of gastronomy, the most popular fairs are the Feira Central de Ceilândia, the Feira Permanente do Núcleo Bandeirante and the Feira Azul do Gama.

And this gastronomic part is the favorite of retired Aurora Porto Fernandes, 75. “I like buying cheese, sweets, donuts and cake. The Fair is a complete place, it has everything”, she declares. With three children, Aurora still doesn’t know what she’s going to get, but she says she already has the best gift: “There are some who give me flowers, others who give me clothes, whatever I get I think is good. Because the best gift is my children.”
