Relatives denounce plastic surgeon after death of patient in BH

The Civil Police of Minas Gerais (PCMG) investigates the death of a woman who underwent plastic surgery in Belo Horizonte. The investigation was opened after the family of Norma Eduarda Fonseca59 years old, reported the case.

According to the victim’s relatives, she had medical complications when doing five procedures aesthetic at the same time. After two months in hospital, the patient did not survive.

“My mother wasn’t going to perform all these procedures. So, at the time of the surgery, it was defined by the number of procedures, right?! She performed the surgery, lasting a total of seven hours”, said Gustavo Botelho, Norma’s son .

The death certificate states that the cause of death was multiple organ dysfunction, septic shock and abdominoplasty. For the son, there was an omission on the part of the plastic surgeon who performed the operation.

“After a surgery as complex as this, there should have been much closer monitoring, something that didn’t happen. So, what goes through our minds, mine and our family members, is that this situation of my mother’s death could have avoided”, said Gustavo.

“The investigation continues with the necessary steps to elucidate the facts. In relation to other possible victims, PCMG advises that they register the incident at a police unit closest to the residence, as well as elements that can contribute to the investigation, so that the facts are duly investigated”, stated PCMG in a note.

The doctor who performed the surgeries is Rodrigo Ribeiro Credidio. He works at a clinic in the Anchieta neighborhood, in the Center-South region of the capital.

In consultation with the Minas Gerais Court of Justice (TJMG) system, the name of the professional is mentioned in at least three medical malpractice lawsuits.

The TV Globo team contacted the surgeon. In a statement, his defense stated that the procedures carried out in Norma took place “without any complications”.

“Due to the Code of Medical Ethics, which establishes the obligation to preserve the confidentiality of the patient’s medical records, I cannot go into details about the clinical case. However, I clarify that the reasons that led to a serious infection and, consequently, the death is not related to the procedure carried out more than 60 days ago”, he informed.

The doctor also said that “there is no exam or evidence that points to misconduct related to the procedure, and all documentation is available for access by family members and competent authorities.”

When contacted by the report, Belo Horizonte Health Surveillance reported that Clínica Credidio does not have a registered complaint and is in the process of renewing its health license, which does not prevent the location from operating. However, the establishment has already been fined previously.

“In the last visit carried out, irregularities were found in the sterilization process and the establishment was fined R$ 9,979.53”, stated the institution.

Gym instructor Kassandra de Assis reports that she also had problems when having surgery with the doctor and complained about his conduct. When she had a breast implant inserted and had post-operative complications, she claims that she did not receive the expected assistance.

“His post-surgical assistance is horrible. He came to see me after the surgery, just a month after, even though I reported having problems since the beginning of the surgery, in the first few days”, said Kassandra.

The procedure resulted in a scar running from one side of his chest to the other. According to Kassandra, what was a dream come true turned into a trauma.

“I’m extremely dissatisfied, unhappy with the result, distressed. My financial life has turned into a snowball. My emotional life isn’t even to be talked about. I’m very shaken psychologically,” concluded the woman.

Mandatory follow-up

The Brazilian Society of Plastic Surgery (SBCP) in Minas Gerais says it is the doctor’s obligation to monitor the patient after any operation. The recommendation is that professionals avoid carrying out several procedures at once.

“You will not put the patient’s health and safety at risk. In other words, carry out serial procedures, lasting more than 6 hours. The patient must be monitored for at least a year during recovery and progress towards surgery”, explained Vagner Rocha , coordinator of the Defense Department of Specialty in Plastic Surgery at SBCP-MG.
