Government inaugurates, in Rio, the first IMPA undergraduate course

-

President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva participated, this Tuesday (2), in the inauguration of Impa Tech, with the first undergraduate course at the Institute of Pure and Applied Mathematics (Impa), in Rio de Janeiro. The event marks the beginning of classes for the first four-year Mathematics of Technology and Innovation class.

In a speech, Lula highlighted the importance of the Brazilian Public School Mathematics Olympiad (Obmep), promoted by Impa since 2005, in the interest of public elementary school students in studying the areas of exact and technological sciences. Over the years, Obmep has become the largest scientific Olympiad in the world in terms of number of participants.

“I think that every child of the humblest person, of the lower middle class person, has the right to have the opportunity to go to university and have a doctorate degree. Education is not a privilege for the rich, education is a right for everyone and education is not an expense, it is an investment and the State needs to take responsibility”, said the president.

“Our role is to create the conditions for you [estudantes] climb more steps, because those who will benefit from this are not you individually. What will benefit from this is the pride of your father and mother, the pride of your brothers and sisters and the pride of this country, which will have a highly qualified workforce to compete with the world, with any country in the world, quality, productivity and, why not, scientific and technological evolution”, added Lula.

Accreditation

A reference in postgraduate studies, in December 2023 Impa was accredited as a higher education institution. The selection of Impa Tech students also took place at the end of last year, with 80% of the places allocated to students with the best performance in knowledge olympiads.

Free of charge, Impa Tech aims to train students to effectively enter the technology and innovation job market. It is located in Porto Maravalley, a technology hub developed by the city of Rio de Janeiro, in the city’s port area, and will share a 10 thousand square meter warehouse with startups and technology companies.

Students will have access to student accommodation, under the responsibility of Rio’s city hall, and financial support from the federal government, with a scholarship of R$500 and food assistance of R$1,290 per month. The bachelor’s degree in Mathematics of Technology and Innovation will serve 100 students in the first year, with an investment of R$18.7 million, reaching 400 students after four years.

Recognition

From Rolim de Moura, in the interior of Rondônia, the new Impa Tech student, Caio Victor Ferreira da Costa, shared memories of his student life and spoke about the importance of Obmep.

“I like to think that everyone here started counting on the help of their parents, using their little fingers, even the great mathematicians present here, doctors and masters, started like this. And life is built from these small steps. And a very important stage in my life and in the lives of other colleagues who join Impa Tech today is Obmep”, guaranteed Caio.

“For a public school student, like me, it’s not just a medal. With a medal come recognition and opportunities. And I am here today thanks to these opportunities,” she added.

The Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation, Luciana Santos, highlighted that Mathematics is transversal and necessary in different areas of knowledge. “Mathematics is everywhere. When we look at the works of Oscar Niemeyer, we have to remember Joaquim Cardoso, from Pernambuco, that Niemeyer thought up that extraordinary architecture, but someone had to do the calculations”, she stated.

“If we look at what happens today in satellite launches, at the Alcântara base, or if we study what happens in Biology, nanotechnology, biotechnology, all of this involves Mathematics. And that’s why we need to do basic science, but with this applied vision, which is what Impa does today, in fact, it has been doing it since 1952. So, this is, nothing more and nothing less, the perspective that we are giving today, because, after all, it is a combination of education and technology that come together for this promising future”, highlighted the minister.

Impa is an internationally renowned research and postgraduate center in Mathematics, offering doctoral, master’s and professional master’s courses. Qualified as a social organization, it is linked to the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (MCTI) and the Ministry of Education (MEC).
