The group stage of CONMEBOL Libertadores 2024 begins this Tuesday (2), with live broadcast on ESPN on Star+ and a clear challenge for the 25 Brazilian opponents: trying to break the hegemony of the country that has won the last five editions.

This domain can be explained in several ways, but it has a logic behind it: financial. For more than a decade, clubs in the Brasileirão they began to have greater investment capacity than their continental rivals, which generated a noticeable economic gap in the squads.

For this year’s edition of the Libertadores, seven of the eight most valuable squads belong to teams from Brazil. The only intruder is the River Plateevaluated by the website Transfermarkt as the fourth most expensive squad in the South American tournament.

Boosted by Endrick’s €45 million, the Palm trees leads the list, with two other players (Raphael Veiga in 4th and Luis Guilherme in 5th) within the top 10 most valuable players. Overall, the cast directed by Abel Ferreira has an estimated value of 209.7 million euros.

O Flamengo occupies second place, with 172.6 million euros, with four players (Pedro in 3rd, Gabigol in 6th, Arrascaeta in 7th and Gerson in 9th) among the 10 most valuable in the group stage.

Current champion and with André being the second “most expensive” player (25 million euros), the Fluminense closes the podium, with a cast projected at 106.6 million euros.

Among the 10 most expensive players, Paulinho, from Atlético-MG, still occupies 8th place. Galo even closes the top 5 of the most expensive squads.
