Famous on social media, less than a week after the anaconda Ana Julia was found dead in Bonito, southwest of Mato Grosso do Sul, the state’s Institute of Criminalistics discovered that the snake died of natural causes. Last Sunday (24), the incident caused great commotion across the country and hypotheses of violence against the almost 7 meter long animal were raised.

The anaconda was found dead, on the banks of the Formoso River, by wildlife documentary filmmaker Cristian Dimitrius. Upon hearing the news, the specialist immediately identified the animal as the same one that had gone viral a few days earlier in a video shared by Dutch biologist Freek Vonk.

Expertise from the Military Environmental Police (PMA), the Civil Police, the Criminalistics Institute and a biologist were at the scene on Tuesday, the 26th.

“Our main objective was to characterize whether or not the snake was killed violently by a gunshot or even if it had some blunt injuries that justified its death”, pointed out the director of the Institute of Criminalistics, Emerson Lopes dos Reis, to G1.

He also explained that at the scene the veterinary expert did not find any injuries on the animal consistent with gunshots, but that she still decided to bring the snake to Campo Grande for further examinations.

“She carried out other tests, such as x-ray images, so that she could be sure that this animal had not suffered any type of gunshot,” he highlighted.

“We carried out X-ray examinations, we did not find any fracture in the head region, which was initially suspected of having been injured, and we ruled out the hypothesis of a violent death… Since the animal did not die a violent death, it therefore left a death as a result of a pathology or some issue specific to the animal where it lives, without human interference in the death of that animal”, explained expert Maristela Melo de Oliveira.

The expert also revealed that she took advantage of the exam to measure the animal, which reached 6 meters and 36 centimeters, and also to collect DNA for genetic sequencing and other biological materials.
