Resistance to the legalization of abortion in Brazil reached a record high, reaching 61% in January, according to data from the PoderData survey carried out from January 27 to 29, 2024. This number has increased by 2 percentage points since May 2022 and 3 percentage points since January 2021, marking the beginning of the historical series.

Those who express support for releasing the procedure remain stable at 24%, remaining unchanged over the last two years. In the first survey carried out in January 2021, 31% of respondents supported allowing abortion in the country.

Despite the majority position against the legalization of abortion, there is a case in the Federal Supreme Court (STF) discussing decriminalization. Retired minister Rosa Weber, who was the case’s rapporteur, voted in favor of decriminalization in September 2023. However, the current president of the STF, Roberto Barroso, who opposes abortion, does not prioritize the issue, and there is no forecast so that it can be debated again by the Court.

The research, conducted by PoderData, comprised 2,500 interviews in 229 municipalities in the 27 federative units, using calls to cell phones and landlines. The margin of error is 2 percentage points, with a 95% confidence interval.

When analyzing the data stratified by demographic groups, it is observed that opposition to allowing abortion increases among men (64%) and elderly people aged 60 or over (66%). The majority of regions, including the South (64%) and Northeast (64%), are against the termination of pregnancy, while the North and Central-West register lower rates, at 55%.

Among Lula government supporters, 55% are against allowing abortion, while 33% support it. In the group of those who disapprove of the government, 16% are in favor, and 68% do not support legalization.
