Thiago Silva thinks about the next step he will take in his career from the second semester onwards. Chelsea’s undisputed starter for three seasons, the 39-year-old defender has a contract until the end of June with the English club. What he knows so far is that retirement is not among his plans.

“At 39 years old, I’m closer to the end of my career. I’ll continue to play football, but where hasn’t been decided yet. I have a few days to think and rethink what I’m going to do”, said the number 6, in an interview with ESPN.

In this way, the expectations of Fluminense fans grow, who await the return of the “Monster” to Laranjeiras. He earned the nickname even before his transfer to Milan, in Italy, which led to his successful career in European football. He also stood out during his long spell at Paris Saint-Germain.

A return to Brazil, in fact, is not seen as an easy decision. Thiago Silva still feels intensely what he experienced during and after the 2014 World Cup. On that occasion, his crying during the penalty shootout between the Brazilian team led by Luiz Felipe Scolari and Chile, in the round of 16, was eternalized.

Thiago Silva: ‘I’ve always been very brave’

Disappointments aside, the defender has no doubt: he feels more respected in Europe.

“I don’t think I’m better known in Europe than in Brazil, but I believe I’m a little more respected here than there, that’s for sure. But there are few who don’t have empathy with me. Some speak to millions of people and form opinions. Today , for Brazil, I am considered a crybaby”, he declared, before continuing:

“And they don’t see how strong I was. I fought tuberculosis and almost died. That made me very strong. And crying is not a situation for weak people, it is for a courageous person, and I have always been very courageous in my life” .

Thiago Silva played 26 games for Chelsea this season. The London team appears in tenth place in the Premier League table, with 31 points. The team’s next challenge is on Sunday (4), at 11am (Brasília time), against Wolverhampton.
