Six stretches of beaches on the coast of Rio Grande do Norte are unsuitable for swimming, according to the most recent Bathing Bulletin for the beaches of the Água Azul program, released this Friday (2). Are they:

  1. Mouth of the Pirangi River, in Nísia Floresta;
  2. Pium River (Ponte Nova), in Parnamirim;
  3. Pium River (Balneário Pium), in Parnamirim;
  4. Areia Preta (Praça da Jangada), in Natal;
  5. Barra de Maxaranguape, in Maxaranguape;
  6. Maracajaú, in Maxaranguape.

51 water samples were collected and classified in 33 points distributed along the coastal strip of the municipalities of Baía Formosa, Canguaretama, Tibau do Sul, Nísia Floresta, Parnamirim, Natal, Extremoz, Ceará-Mirim, Maxaranguape, Touros, Macau, Areia Branca, Grossos and Tibau, in order to inform bathers about the conditions of the monitored beaches.

The Bathing Bulletin analyzes the amount of thermotolerant coliforms found in water and the classification is based on standards established by the National Environmental Council (Conama). Validity is one week.

The study is carried out in partnership with the Institute for Sustainable Development and the Environment (Idema) and the Federal Institute of Education, Science and Technology of Rio Grande do Norte (IFRN).
