The first weekend of February and Monday the 5th will be marked by intense heat It is instability in Santa Catarina. This Friday, 2nd, and Saturday, 3rd, firm weather prevails for most of the day, but between the afternoon and night, the availability of heat and humidity favors rain showers and isolated thunderstorms in areas between the Middle -West, plateaus and Alto Vale do Itajaí.

Between Sunday the 4th and Monday the 5th, a cold front which moves through the ocean, together with heat and humidity, reinforces instability in Santa Catarina. The most intense instability occurs on Sunday, 4th, between the Baixo and Middle Valley and the North Coast with conditions for occasionally intense rain, lightning, gusts of wind and occasional hail. Maximum temperatures exceed 35 º C in the West, coast, and nearby areas. In the Far West and in areas between the Itajaí Valley and the North region, maximum temperatures approach 38°C.

In these days there are conditions for new storms between the afternoon and night, mainly from the Midwest to the Santa Catarina coast. Given this, there are risk for flooding, occasional flash floods, damage to the electrical network and roofing.

What is a cold front?

According to the Meteorology team of the State Secretariat for Civil Protection and Defense (SDC), “a cold front is the meeting of two air masses with different characteristics of temperatures, humidity and density. In these cases, a cold air mass moves towards a hot air mass, which explains the heat before the rains and the cooling after them. When the cold air advances, because it is denser, it remains at lower altitudes, and causes the hot air to rise, carrying moisture and forming rain clouds.”
