Lula (photo) said on Friday, 2, that “Afro-descendant likes the beat of a drum”. The statement was made to a young black girl during a ceremony at the Volkswagen factory, in São Bernardo do Campo, in São Paulo.

The PT member said he thought the woman was a singer, a percussionist, or the girlfriend of someone who was at the event. Here is the statement:

“This beautiful girl is here. I was asking: ‘What is this girl doing sitting down? What is this girl doing sitting there and I haven’t heard anyone say her name?’. I said: ‘She’s a singer. She will sing’. Then I asked: ‘No, there won’t be music. So is she going to drum something? Why an Afro-descendant likes a batuque, a drum‘. It is also not. I said: ‘Wow, so she’s someone’s girlfriend’. It’s not either. What is this girl? This girl was awarded next year as the most important apprentice in this company and won an award in Germany.”

In his speech, Lula also addressed a hypothetical relationship with the young woman.

“If I could, I would ask: wants to date me? No, she doesn’t want to. She doesn’t want it because she has better things on the market and I don’t want it either, because I have Janja. And Janja will be mad at you.”

The young woman who took the stage with Lula is Luiza Eduarda Leôncio, 20 years old, a specialist Volkswagen operator. In 2023, she won an award for the automaker’s best student apprentice.

The president’s statement had repercussions on social media. The term “racism” appears among the most talked about topics on X this Saturday morning, the 3rd.
