Lula travels to Egypt and Ethiopia after Carnival
Ricardo Stuckert/PR – 01/16/2024

President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva will make his first international trip this year right after Carnival. He will be in Egypt between the 15th and 16th of February and will go to Ethiopia, where he will remain between the 17th and 18th. As shown in the R7during 2024, the head of the Executive must concentrate commitments for Brazil, focusing on the deliveries of the Growth Acceleration Program (PAC) and municipal elections.

In Cairo, the capital of Egypt, Lula will meet with President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi. The meeting takes place months after Egyptian support for the withdrawal of Brazilians and their families from the Gaza Strip, which is in conflict with Israel. Last year, the PT member spoke on the phone with the Egyptian leader and defended the creation of a kind of humanitarian corridor for foreigners to leave the region, which was met.

Afterwards, Lula goes to Addis Ababa, the capital of Ethiopia, to participate in the meeting of heads of state and government of the African Union. Since 2023, the international organization has been a permanent member of the G20, a group that brings together the 19 richest economies in the world and the European Union.

The G20 is chaired by Brazil this year. The country will host the group’s heads of state summit, scheduled to take place in November, in Rio de Janeiro. The management’s motto is “Building a fair world and a sustainable planet”, with a focus on combating hunger, poverty and inequality; global governance reform; and dimensions of sustainable development — economic, social and environmental.

Next, Lula must visit Guyana. The country will host the annual Common Market and Caribbean Community (Caricom) summit in the last week of February. The trip takes place under the context of tension between Guyana and Venezuela, led by dictator Nicolás Maduro, over Essequibo, a border region between the two nations, which is rich in oil.

2023

Lula ended 2023 having traveled to 24 countries, spending 75 days outside Brazil. During his absence, his vice-president, Geraldo Alckmin, assumed the Presidency of the Republic. The PT member did not only leave Brazil in March and October, with this last month being the period in which he was recovering from surgery on his right hip, carried out at the end of September. The procedure, considered low risk, included the insertion of a hybrid prosthesis.

The president had official agendas in 18 states in Brazil in 2023. The survey carried out by R7 considered 26 federative units, since the place of work and official residence of the President of the Republic is Brasília, in the Federal District. Lula said that she intends to visit all Brazilian states in the first half of 2024.

In January, Lula was in São Paulo, on the 12th, in Salvador, in Bahia, and Recife, in Pernambuco, on the 18th, and Fortaleza, in Ceará, on the 19th. The president returned to the capital of São Paulo on the 25th, anniversary of the city of São Paulo. This Friday (2), Lula was in Santos and São Bernardo do Campo. Palácio do Planalto plans a trip to Minas Gerais next week.
