A survey by the Ministry of Justice and Public Security (MJSP) places Mato Grosso in first place in the ranking of states with the highest rate of femincides per group of one hundred thousand inhabitants in 2023. Although the absolute numbers registered in the State are lower than in 11 units of the federation, when population proportions are taken into account, the State soars in the rate of homicides committed against women. To give you an idea, the rate in Mato Grosso is 90% higher than the Brazilian average.
According to data from the MJSP, the femicide rate per 100,000 inhabitants in Brazil is 0.66. In Mato Grosso, the value is 1.66 – that is, almost two women are victims of femicide for every group of 100 thousand people. The state that comes closest to the number in Mato Grosso is Tocantins, with a rate of 1.10 femicides per 100,000 inhabitants. Mato Grosso do Sul (1.07) and the Federal District (1.04) also stand out.
In absolute numbers, São Paulo was the place that recorded the most feminicides, where in total there were 221 in 2023. But given the population of more than 47 million inhabitants, the number represents a rate of 0.47 women killed per 100 thousand inhabitants . In Mato Grosso, the absolute numbers show that 46 women died throughout 2023, one less than in 2022.
Regarding the cities with the highest number of cases, the capital Cuiabá and the inland municipality of Sorriso (397 km away) are tied, with five femicides each. In the interior city, four homicides were recorded at once, during the massacre that shocked Mato Grosso and killed Cleci, Miliane, Manuela and Melissa Calvi Cardoso, in November.
