Between January and April 2023, 100,300 international passengers passed through Salvador Airport, more than double the number recorded in the first four months of 2022, according to data from Anac (National Civil Aviation Agency) obtained by the Bahia Econômica portal. As a result, the airport became the main sending and receiving hub for international tourists in the Northeast.

In the period analyzed, Salvador Airport accounted for 35% of international passenger movement in the Northeast region, followed by Recife (28%) and Fortaleza (26%). Also according to the survey, the Salvador/Lisbon route (Tap Airlines) was the busiest. Salvador/Buenos Aires and Salvador/Madrid (both by Air Europa) occupy second and third position, respectively.

For Felipe Oliveira Pedreira, owner of Bahia Terra Turismo e Eventos, Salvador Airport has taken the lead in the movement of foreign tourists in the Northeast as a result of the attractive locations that the state of Bahia offers for international tourists: “Ilha de Boipeba, Morro de São Paulo, Salvador and Chapada Diamantina are just some of the attractions that usually attract travelers from all over the world.”

Furthermore, in Pedreira’s view, the new private administration of Salvador airport has been bringing improvements to its structure, which may also have contributed to the increase in the number of visitors from abroad.

“The capital of Bahia is an attractive hub for tourists from other countries. Among several elements, the energy of the people of Salvador is an attraction in itself and makes the city even more special for those who come from outside,” he says. “We are a welcoming people with an intense cultural expression, which captivates foreigners”, he adds.

According to data released by Setur-BA (State Tourism Secretariat), Salvador airport started this summer season with a 36% growth in the number of flights and 38% in the volume of international passengers. According to a note published by the organization, the increase is the result of agreements signed between the department, the aviation companies and Vinci Airports, which manages the airport terminal in the capital of Bahia.

“Bahia is a mix of people and cultures from all over the world. This means that, upon arriving in the state, tourists identify a little, or a lot, with their place of origin”, says the owner of Bahia Terra Turismo e Eventos.
