In 2023, Mato Grosso’s industry recorded the best performance in job creation in the last three years. Data from the General Register of Employed and Unemployed Persons (CAGED) analyzed by the Industry Observatory of the Federation of Industries of Mato Grosso (Fiemt) show that the industrial sector had the second highest balance of jobs among sectors of the economy in the year 2023.

7,839 thousand jobs were created last year, which is the difference between the total number of admissions and dismissals, which represents a 19% share of the total 40.7 thousand jobs maintained. According to the report, leadership is maintained by the services sector with 17,286 thousand jobs. The third position in the ranking was occupied by the commerce sector with 7,077 thousand jobs, followed by the agricultural (6.1 thousand) and construction (2.3 thousand) sectors.

The five municipalities in Mato Grosso that had the greatest participation in the balance of jobs created in the state in 2023 are Cuiabá with 18% (7.5 thousand in total), Rondonópolis with 10% (3.9 thousand), Várzea Grande with 7% (2.7 thousand), Sinop with 6% (2.5 thousand) and Sorriso with 5% (2 thousand).

“These numbers demonstrate the resilience and importance of the industry for Mato Grosso’s economy. The industry stands out as a sector that has managed to maintain and generate jobs, contributing to the economic development of the region”, points out the president of Sistema Fiemt, Silvio Rangel.

According to him, the scenario is possible because the industrial sector is going through moments of modernization, investments and the opening of new businesses, which may have resulted in a greater demand for workers in all areas.

Hiring foreigners

To be able to solve the challenge of lack of labor, some strategies have been adopted by the industry, including hiring foreigners. According to data from Caged, at the end of 2023, among all 2,682 formal hirings of foreigners in Mato Grosso, the industry was the one that hired the most workforce: 56% (1,627 people). The survey also shows that 21% (600 people) of foreign people are in the services sector, 15% (432 people) in commerce, 4% (108 people) in construction and 3% (95 people) in agriculture.

The total number of foreigners hired is also the highest recorded in the last three years in Mato Grosso. Within the industry, the economic activities that concentrate the largest number of foreign hires are the manufacturing of food products, especially slaughtering and manufacturing of meat products, which concentrates more than 88% of the total registered in the industry, with more than 1,439 net hires accumulated in the period.
