Criminal experts from the Alagoas Scientific Police warn of the risk of consuming counterfeit alcoholic beverages. The number of seizures of counterfeit alcoholic beverages has increased significantly across the country, which is putting the health and lives of the population at risk.

Carnival is coming, with previews in full swing, blocks in the street and carnival balls taking place in all municipalities in Alagoas, always accompanied by lots of alcoholic drinks. And what was not known is that behind offers of drinks in bottles apparently identical to the brand’s original ones, drinks with no provenance may be being offered, bottled in clandestine factories, often using authentic labels, lids, wrappers and seals. or identical to them.

Data from the Brazilian Beverage Association (Abrabe) shows that in the first quarter of last year alone, the number of seizures of counterfeit drinks grew 98% compared to the previous period. In addition to the crime provided for in article 272 of the Penal Code, relating to the consumption of products harmful to health, counterfeiting alcoholic beverages entails the crime of tax evasion, which generates financial losses to the State.

The warning was given by three criminal experts from the Institute of Criminalistics of Alagoas (IC/AL) who participated this week, in Aracaju, Sergipe, in a course on identifying fraud in alcoholic beverages. This training, organized by the General Coordination of Forensics of Sergipe, was carried out by Digeo and Allience Against Counterfeit Spirits (AACS), which is the world body to combat beverage piracy and was taught by the corporate security manager, Daniel Monferrari (Digeo) and intelligence specialist Roberto Bianchi (AACS), who join efforts in combating counterfeit alcoholic beverage brands.

Márcia Yanara, Lídia Tarchetti and Rosana Frota, members of the Head of Documentoscopy Expertise at IC/AL, explained that during the course, fundamental knowledge was acquired for the identification of counterfeit alcoholic beverages, considering that the drinks seized, under suspicion of counterfeiting, both in places that sell such products, and in operations in supposed clandestine factories, are destined for expertise at the Alagoas Criminalistics Institute to be duly analyzed with the consequent production of expert reports that will provide evidence for the appropriate punishments for who commits this serious crime against public health.

“Training to identify counterfeit, misguided and non-compliant drinks was extremely important. It enabled us to identify and verify possible adulterations in the counterfeiting of distilled beverages with regard to security devices present on labels, seals, bottles, lids, seals, labels, among other distortions found, not compatible with manufacturers’ standards” , explained expert Márcia Yanara.
