On the 2nd and 3rd of February, Pernambuco opens its doors to the regional stage of the SESI Robotics Tournament, which encourages young people aged 9 to 15 to seek solutions to everyday problems in modern society, inspiring them to pursue a career in areas of technology and innovation in the future. In total, 36 teams from public and private schools and garage teams from Pernambuco, Alagoas, Aracaju, Paraíba and Rio Grande do Norte participate in this phase in the FIRST LEGO League (FLL) Challenge and FIRST Tech Challenge (FTC) modalities – the best evaluated will be classified for the national phase, in Brasília, from February 28th to March 2nd. With different themes each year, this season was called “Masterpiece” and challenges students to think about how theater, cinema, music and design allow us to create the future. The event will take place at SESI Paulista and is open to the public.
From Pernambuco, the 12 SESI-PE units (Caruaru, Escada, Cabo de Santo Agostinho, Ibura, Paulista, Camaragibe, Araripina, Goiana, Moreno, Petrolina, Vasco da Gama, Belo Jardim) and 10 other private schools participate in this regional phase. . This year, eight state and municipal public schools participate with eight teams, representing the democratization and expansion of access to robotics, providing more opportunities for public school students. In addition to these, the event will feature a garage team and another from a Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) Project Swell.
In the Tournament, teams are evaluated in four categories: Robot Challenge, Robot Design, Innovation Project and Core Values (fundamental values in the competition, based on integration, interaction and appreciation of teamwork). The dynamics of the two days of competition work as follows: while some teams present their projects in the room to the judges to evaluate the core values, the robot design and the innovation project, others will be competing in the arena. In the arena challenge, each team participates in three official rounds and the best score of the three is added to the scores from the other areas evaluated.
For the superintendent of SESI-PE, Claudia Cartaxo, this year’s theme will require a lot of creativity from children and teenagers. “Teams will need to put their heads together to use science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics, which represent the STEAM methodology, to inspire big ideas and complete the challenge missions. Robotics has the power to boost the protagonism of our young people and we need to give due value to this discipline”, she pointed out.
