President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva told a young black woman during an event this Friday (2) that “an Afro-descendant like that likes the beat of a drum.” The statement was made during an event at the Volkswagen factory, in São Bernardo do Campo, in ABC Paulista.

Lula called the young woman to praise her because she won an award for performance within the company.

“This beautiful girl is here. I was asking: what is this girl doing sitting there, and I haven’t heard anyone say her name? I said: ‘She’s a singer, she’s going’. No, she’s not going to sing. I asked (and they said) : ‘No, there won’t be music’. So, she’s going to beat something. Because an Afro-descendant likes a drum to beat,” he said.

To explain who the young woman was, the president continued: “She isn’t either. I said: ‘Wow, so she’s someone’s girlfriend’. She isn’t either. What is this girl? This girl was awarded next year as the most important apprenticed at this company and won an award in Germany. That’s what we want to do for people in this country.”

Lula’s visit to the factory this Friday was motivated by the German company’s announcement that it will make investments in Brazil by 2028.

The Social Communication Secretariat of the Presidency of the Republic was contacted, but until the publication of this report it did not provide a position on the president’s speech.
