Dálet Vieira / Ascom IMAPProtecting local fauna and flora is a concern in Alagoas, which is why there are constant incentives to increase Conservation Units (CUs). The Alagoas Environmental Institute (IMA/AL) approved the request to create Mata da Sálvia, which now holds the title of second largest Private Natural Heritage Reserve (RPPN) in the State, representing a milestone for the metropolitan region.

The new RPPN is located between the municipalities of Rio Largo and Satuba, as well as a small fraction of Maceió. It covers more than 620 hectares and has important characteristics for the preservation of the Atlantic Forest, the biome in which it is located. One of the highlights of the Unit is that it houses an important tributary of the Mundaú River, one of the most important in Alagoas.

Marcela Daher, responsible for the reserve and representative of Usina Utinga Leão, states that the motivation for making Mata da Sálvia an RPPN was due to identifying a wide variety of endemic fauna and flora species, many of which are threatened with extinction.

“In addition, the forests and natural areas of this location play a crucial role in maintaining local ecological and hydrological balances, ensuring the preservation of water resources and providing protection against erosion and flooding”, he highlights.

It is worth mentioning that the RPPN Mata da Sálvia will host reintroduction programs for species threatened with extinction or in the vulnerable category, such as the Chauá Papagaio (Amazona rhodocorytha), Alagoas Mutum (Pauxi mito) and the Macuco (Tinamus solitarios ).

During visits made to Mata da Sálvia by IMA technicians, several floodable areas and springs were identified. These point to the existence and abundance of water resources in the area. Alex Nazário, manager of Conservation Units at the Institute, describes that this natural wealth is extremely important for maintaining biodiversity in the area, because it ensures the development of local flora and fauna in addition to providing a supply of drinking water for local communities that take advantage of this important environmental service.

“Mata da Sálvia is the second largest RPPN, in terms of area, in Alagoas, behind only the Mata do Cedro Reserve. This is an interesting milestone, as there is a very rich biodiversity that has been proven in research records in the area, in addition to this region having a fragment of the Atlantic Forest biome in a good state of conservation. All these factors make it a reserve with a strategic location for conservation, especially as it is located in the metropolitan region of Maceió”, explains Nazário.

Also according to Daher, the next steps should include the formulation of a Management Plan, a document that establishes guidelines and strategies for sustainable management; as well as the protection of endemic and threatened species. In fact, these actions are fundamental to making an environment conducive to the reintroduction of wild animals.

Benefits of creating an RPPN

The recognition of an area as a Private Natural Heritage Reserve (RPPN) offers several benefits. In addition to directly contributing to the conservation of biodiversity, the owner will be entitled to exemption from the Rural Land Property Tax (ITR) related to the reserve area.

There are other advantages such as priority in the analysis of projects by the National Environmental Fund (FNMA), preference in the evaluation of agricultural credit requests for projects on properties with RPPN, and opportunities for cooperation with public and private entities for protection, management and management of the reserve.
